WHAT MAKES A BRAND AND WHAT MAKES A LOGO?

Picture this, Saturday morning, scrolling through reddit like I usually do, and I found a post that got my blood boiling.  A woman wanted a luxury/refined/premium logo for her and her husband's business. Budget … $350.

After a couple of deep breaths I realised she wasn't being cheap. She just didn't know what she was actually asking for.

Because she wasn't buying a logo. She was looking to buy people's trust that her business was indeed what she was looking for in a logo.

Trust is the thing you're actually paying for.

Why do we buy anything? Trust. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes it's earned over time and sometimes it comes from someone else telling you they had a good experience. It's the biggest selling tool a business has and it starts with how you present (Brand) yourself.

What it looks like when trust breaks.

You're scrolling instagram (for way too long if you're anything like me) and a dish comes up that looks amazing. One of your favourites. Thanks algorithm.

You click through to their page and it's a hot mess. Mismatched posts. Photos that look like a toddler got hold of mum's phone and Microsoft Office menus printed and sat on wobbly tables.

You're out. Trust gone. And that meal was probably one of the best you're probably going to ever have.

Now let's flip it. Clean website, professional photos, images that sell you the exact feeling you want from the product. You trust it instantly. Two weeks later it turns up and it’s a pile of hot garbage. Your wallet lighter and your heart heavier for it.

Same result, opposite order. One lost you before you walked in. The other lost you after.

Thats the part people miss. Branding gets someone to try you. The work decides if they come back. A logo can't do all the heavy lifting on its own.

So what does $350 actually get you?

A logo. That's it. Someone will draw you a mark, send you a png and you'll be on your way.

But what then? How do I use it?

What it doesn't get you is a system. No colour palette that works on packaging and on screen. No typefaces with rules for how they're used. No layout logic. No guidelines so the next person who touches your brand doesn't wreck it. No thinking about who your customer is and why they should believe you. No photography mood to create that feeling that makes you want to try what you're selling.

That's the gap. She wanted her brand to feel premium, but premium isn't a font choice or a “pretty logo” a Fivver or Upwork designer created, Its consistency. It's every touchpoint saying the same thing. It's a customer seeing your packaging, then your website, then your invoice, and getting the same feeling every time.

You can't buy that for $350. Not because designers are greedy, but because that work takes time and there isn't a shortcut.

A cheap logo makes you look like you have a business. A proper brand makes people believe in one.
